Chapter 3:
An Awkward Date
Sierra scratched the back of her neck nervously as she sized herself up in the full-size mirror before her. After spending an entire day working, she had not expected to go on a dinner date, especially not on one with a handsome client. With a gulp, she powdered her nose. Then, she looked down at her phone and gasped. It was nearly eight.
“I guess that will have to do,” she murmured to herself, poking at her facial imperfections.
She hurried down the stairs to wait by the front door. She rocked back and forth on her heels anxiously, whistling to herself idly.
“Where are you, Giles?” she asked aloud.
Seemingly on cue for once, there was a knock at her door. Sierra's heart dropped, but she knew she had to calm herself. After taking a deep breath and fixing her skirt, she forced her best professional smile and opened the door.
“Hey there, beautiful,” Giles Jr. said with a massive grin on his face. He held out a handful of tiger lilies for her and said, “Beautiful flowers for a beautiful lady.”
Sierra blushed and took the bouquet from his strong hands. He smiled at her and peered inside the house.
“May I come in while you find a vase for those?” he asked.
Sierra furrowed her brow, but nodded nonetheless. She was not used to people inviting themselves inside of her home. But she did not see any harm in it, so she waved him inside and closed the door behind him before going to a china cabinet in her hallway. She opened it and started looking for a vase that would fit the large bouquet.
“So, where are we going for dinner?” Sierra shouted.
“Oh I don't know,” Giles said, seating himself on her couch and grabbing a handful of the assorted nuts on her coffee table. He tossed them in his mouth and added, “Where you wanna go?”
Sierra frowned as she found a vase and closed the china cabinet. She walked out into the living room and looked down at him, confused.
“You didn't get a reservation?” she asked. “I thought you said we would get lobster Thermidor?”
He chuckled and shook his head.
“I don't need a reservation, babe,” he said, his golden eyes glinting. “I'm the alpha male! Plus, I don't know that I want lobster Thermidor anymore. I had it for lunch.”
Sierra swallowed down a scoff.
“Alright then,” she murmured, circling around him and walking into the kitchen to fill the vase with water.
“What you in the mood for?” he asked loudly with a mouth full of assorted nuts.
“I dunno,” Sierra replied, filling the vase with tap water. She then took it to her dining table, set it in the middle, and added, “Maybe Italian?”
Giles snorted.
“Sure, whatever you want,” he muttered. “You almost ready to go?”
Sierra walked back into the living room and wiped her hands on her skirt.
“Yeah, sure,” she said in a low voice, becoming a little unsure about the entire date. “Listen, are you sure this is appropriate? I don't know if we should—”
“Oh, hush.
